What is an employment authorization document?
A work permit is the card that lets an eligible non-citizen work in the United States. It is granted through some other status or pending application, never on its own.

Eligibility is category-based.
Asylum applicants, adjustment applicants, TPS holders, DACA recipients, U and T applicants, VAWA self-petitioners, students on practical training, and certain spouses each file under their own category.

Some people do not need one at all.
Permanent residents, and visa holders whose status already authorizes work for a specific employer, need no card. An unnecessary application costs months, so the category is confirmed first.

Renewals no longer extend themselves.
For most categories the automatic extension that used to bridge a pending renewal is gone, and several now receive shorter cards. The date on the card is the date authorization ends.
