What is a FOIA records request?
A records request retrieves your own immigration history from the agencies holding it, so a new filing is built against what the government has.

Different agencies hold different pieces.
One agency holds your immigration file, another holds entries and border encounters, a third holds detention records, and the courts hold their own. Each is requested separately.

It is a diagnostic step, not a remedy.
A request creates no status and fixes nothing by itself. Its value is what it prevents: filing something that runs into an old order or an encounter you had forgotten.

Anyone can ask for their own file.
There is no eligibility test and no status requirement. An attorney can request on your behalf, and a family member needs your written consent.

This step earns its place when a history is unclear: applications you never fully understood, an order you were told about but never saw, a case handled by someone you can no longer reach. Where a history is straightforward, we say so.
